The poetry of Living Healthy in a Globalized World
The focus of this session is to broaden student's understanding of the issues related to global health as well as the diverse ways that different cultures and societies approach healthy living. From Gnawan spiritual healers in Morocco to Yoga practice on the sub-continent, we will explore the myriad paths to being healthy.
I did a little research on health issues in South America. One issue I found was mentioned at our meeting the other day. Air pollution, clean water, and sanitation can all be attributed to lack of urban planning in South American cities. Here are some links to lesson plans that we might consider:

I also found some activities for diabetes if we decide to use that for North America.
ReplyDeleteTeresa, I found this video link on you-tube, I believe some parts will add some ideas onto the activity.

I love this topic. My life completely changed for the better due to my study abroad in Europe, as I took up bicycling again and now bike in Bloomington on a regular basis. If you are interested in touching on a positive way Europeans (and in particular, the Dutch) have improved not only their health but their air quality, here's a video of Groningen, The Netherlands. It's long but it might give you ideas, at the very least. I've seen this in action in the Netherlands, and it is amazing to see and participate in. The video is titled, "Gronigen: The World's Cycling City."

This is an interesting and engaging video about the lifestyle of the Groningen city in Netherlands. I believe that this video will create some ideas about participants understanding of global health. The interwoven benefits of this cycling in this city will motivate to view global health issues as that are not isolated. Participants will also realize the role of individuals, governments and higher institutions contributions to health issues that are rights all the human race.

The lesson plan drafts look great! It's great to see that you are focusing on different geographical regions for the different days of the week. I have a few questions/comments:
ReplyDeleteMonday: 1. the Video- it is great that you have found a video that would go well with your topic. What would be the task that would accompany it? More specifically, what will the students be expected to do, in addition to watching the video? It would be great if they have a task assigned to it.
Wednesday: What exactly do you mean by the first activity, communicating with limited resources? What will the students do during this activity?

DeleteWe are going to use something called edpuzzle with the video. It enables us to embed questions for discussion in the video. As the questions come up, the video will stop for the discussion.
I think Addison could better describe the Wednesday activity.
Love the topic and how each day is focused on a different region/country. I am sure the students will learn so much from this workshop. Wish I could attend :)
ReplyDeleteI love your topic of healthy living. I think it is so important for people to take care of themselves and find the tools to do so. There are so many different external factors that can weigh in on the people's health, so I love that you are investigating several different regions and concepts.
ReplyDeleteIt was interesting to learn that the students were engaged in the activities and learned new things about global health they were not aware of. For example, their diverse perspectives of prevention of diseases and the overall presentations of global health was amazing. However, I think the classroom where this activities should take place this week is limited to movement. The sink in between desks hinders the free movement of materials when students need to share. At one point I believed one of the tablets was going to fall into the sink. The laboratory setting for this kind of activity generally seems to create some difficulty to display papers for presentation and again movement.

ReplyDeleteDay two and day three
Our day two focused on nutrition and related health issues. The students were energetic since experiences in food and nutrition in their own contexts is common. The activity was for them to reflect on nutrition provided by their own school communities. It was interesting for them to relate on how today’s nutrition could impact on their growth and academic development. Through the activity the students became aware of prevalence, government budget and health consequences that result from unhealthy and unbalanced nutrition. The tablets in addition to their personal phones became tools for researching on this sensitive matter and finally voice their concerns to school administrators to rethink on meals provided by their schools. One group took this opportunity to start working on their final presentations.
Day three had challenges with time to complete planned activities. Our group had limited time to complete activities planned for the day. However, the main objective for the day to discuss about global waters was achieved. The assignment helped students to look differently on the fact that water is not only a problem in developing countries but also to the developed world on how water is consumed. When they had developed the piece of land and waterfront offered to them to develop and invest, their perspective of use of water locally, and globally created discussion topics.
Overall, the day was smooth and productive by participants moving a step forward on their final projects.
